An android year?

The past year saw Android truly arrive in India with some excellent devices such as the HTC Hero and Tattoo. Google claims to be a "Non Evil" search engine company and though they are not exactly evil, they can hardly be called "just"a search engine company.

Aided by HTC's super-smooth "Sense"user interface, Android is a breeze to use. Log in with your Google username and your contacts from Gmail, Google Maps as well as the Google Calendar and other features just meld together. Combined with Facebook, Flickr and Twitter integration, devices such as the Hero and its smaller sibling, the Tattoo, work like clockwork.

The Tattoo, despite possessing a not-so-fast processor, gives the integrated Android experience for a very reasonable price Rs 16,900, or half the price of the Apple iPhone. The "search engine company" has now tied up with HTC to make the Google Nexus One a self-branded phone.

If launched in India, its estimated price would be around Rs 25,000, which will make it cheaper than the iPhone but capable of running multiple apps. While the iPhone still has the superior music player, Android blows away Nokia's tired Symbian operating system. Though the newer Maemo operating system is better, there may not be enough devices using it.

It isn't just the Nexus which intrigues us. The Motorola Droid with a slide-out keyboard has been getting rave reviews as well. And better still is SonyEricsson's Xperia X10 whose four-inch OLED screen is among the best we have ever seen on a mobile device. Both these devices will be top drawer they will wear price-tags of around Rs 35,000-40,000.

However, there are some issues with Android that Google should address. First, the PC-to-phone sync process is still a bit clunky. Second, and more crucial, not all applications available on the Android marketplace work on all devices supporting Android. There are right now three different Android versions 1.5, 1.6 and 2.1 and this makes life a bit complicated. Worse, many manufacturers add another layer of software on top of Android, and not all are very good.

That said, Google should hopefully iron out some of the kinks shortly. And with that Android should be on its way to becoming the smartphone platform of choice in India this year.

Drink beer for strong bones.... :)

A glass or two of beer can strengthen bones and prevent osteoporosis, a disorder characterised by weak and brittle bones, the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture (JSFA) reported on Monday, but experts say the amount you have is critical.

More than 500 ml a day can cause fractures and aggravate other chronic diseases associated with age, such as heart disease and diabetes. According to WHO, one in two women and one in three men in India over the age of 50 have low bone mass, which can lead to debilitating fractures in later life.

The new JSFA study supports previous research -such as a study from Spain in the journal Nutrition in August, 2009 - that found high level of silicon in beer slowed bone loss that led to fractures and boosted the formation of new bone. Silicon is present in beer in the soluble form of orthosilicic acid, up to half of which can be absorbed by the body making beer a major contributor to silicon intake.

Lighter beers brewed with a greater use of hops - a bittering agent that adds flavour and stability in beer - have the most silicon as the extra heat used in malting darker beers destroys some of it. These studies, however, should not prompt you to hit the beer bars tonight.

"It's far healthier to drink milk. With alcohol, the amount is the key and one unit - 500 ml of beer, 30 ml of whisky - is good, two units are acceptable.

Anything more make bones brittle .

apart from aggravating other chronic diseases," said Dr Ambrish Mithal, senior consultant endocrinologist, Apollo Hospitals and Medanta-the Medicity.

Difference Between in Web 1.0, Web 2.0, & Web 3.0

Like any other technology, Web and emerging, not immediately ready. In the absence of standards, there's a little on their growth and development versions of the most acceptable seems to be nervousness about the stages are as follows:

* Web 1.0
* Web 2.0
* Web 3.0 (Also known as web sense)

So, what is the difference between these versions?

Web 1.0: 1999 before the Internet, experts say age is read only. The average Internet user's role was limited only to read information presented to him. The best examples are static websites which have mushroomed the.com millions during the boom. No active communication or information from the manufacturer consumer information was the information flow.

Web 2.0: Web 2.0 Web led to the birth of lack of cooperation with the ordinary user is active. A study earlier in the year 1999 contributed to write-Livejournal marked with the era published (April, began in 1999) and Blogger (August, started in 1999). Now a non-technical user interaction and actively contribute to the different blog platforms can use web. In this era shared with some new concepts, namely user rights. Blog, society, media and streaming video. Publishing your content is just a few clicks away! Some notable development of Web 2.0 Twitter, YouTube, eZineArticles, Flickr and Facebook are.

Web 3.0: It seems that all of us whatever we have in Web 2.0, but is way behind when it comes to mind is wished for. Maybe in a year six children from the current search technology is better analytical capacity! Web 2.0 based on keyword search of information held in surcharges. The following features are going to be a part of Web 3.0:

* Contextual search
* Tailor the search
* Personalized Search
* 3 D Web Development
* Deductive reasoning

But yet there's something very clever web though to achieve this goal effort has already started can be said as a view. 2 weeks before the official Google blog mentioned about how Google's search algorithms are now mature as it can identify many synonyms.

For example, graphics and photos now as means of treatment are similar. From now on you after your search query GM crops GM (General Motors) will not lead to the website. Why? Because the first time Google will recognize synonym understands that GM General Motors or genetically modified can mean. So the keyword crop this context, namely that the user will infer information about genetically modified crops and do not want General Motors. Similarly, genetically modified crops GM car, you will not be created. Out to see how it yourself artificial intelligence works in the newly added Google to try. In addition, many built on Web 3.0 websites is that personalizes your search. Web is really intelligent.

Now, a software to translate as you speak on phone

Bangalore: Internet giant Google, which has also made an entry in the mobile world with its own phone Nexus One, is working on a software which will interpret foreign languages as a person speak. The translation is done almost instantly and Google hopes to have a basic system ready within a couple of years, reports Chris Gourlay of Sunday Times.

Google has already developed an automatic system for translating text on computers, which is being polished by scanning millions of multi-lingual websites and documents. So far it covers 52 languages, adding Haitian Creole last week.

Recently Google also launched a feature where a user can search on the search engine by saying the key words instead of typing. Now it is working on combining the two technologies to produce software capable of understanding a caller's voice and translating it into a synthetic equivalent in a foreign language. The phone would analyse "packages" of speech, listening to the speaker until it understands the full meaning of words and phrases, before attempting translation. "We think speech-to-speech translation should be possible and work reasonably well in a few years' time," said Franz Och, Google's Head of Translation Services.

Although automatic text translators are now reasonably effective, voice recognition has proved more challenging. "Everyone has a different voice, accent and pitch," said Och. "But recognition should be effective with mobile phones because by nature they are personal to you. The phone should get a feel for your voice from past voice search queries, for example."

Dinosaur footprints found in New Zealand

Seventy million-year-old dinosaur footprints have been found in New Zealand, a geologist said.

The footprints were found in the South Island region of Nelson - the first evidence of the dinosaur's existence in the country.

Geologist Greg Browne of the New Zealand government-owned research organisation, G.N.S. Science, found the footprints while he was investigating rock and sediment formations in Whanganui inlet at Golden Bay, said a press release of Tourism New Zealand here.

The footprints were in six locations spread over an area of about 10km.

Browne said the prints were made by sauropods - large herbivorous dinosaurs with long necks and tails and pillar-like legs.

Palaeontologist Hamish Campbell said the find was 'hugely exciting' and added: 'We will now go and examine rocks of comparable age.'

Browne said the footprints were made in beach sands and were probably quickly covered and preserved by mud from subsequent tides.

'What makes this discovery special is the unique preservation of the footprints in an environment where they could easily have been destroyed by waves, tides, or wind.'

Up to 20 footprints were found at one location and the depressions are roughly circular, with the largest about 60cm in diameter. Most are smaller, typically between 10cm and 20cm in diameter, and were probably formed by dinosaurs between 2m and 6m in length and weighing several tonnes, said Browne.

Dinosaur bones, mostly vertebrae, have been found at three locations - northern Hawkes Bay, Port Waikato, and the Chatham Islands.

Browne said the footprints added a considerable amount of information about how dinosaurs moved, how fast they moved and how big they were.

'This discovery opens the way for further study on a range of dinosaur-related issues in New Zealand.'

Browne's discovery will be published in the December issue of New Zealand Journal of Geology & Geophysics.
